Air Marshal Vinod Patney was the AOC-in-C of Western Air Command under whose aegis the air operations during the Kargil Conflict were conducted. He retired as Vice Chief of Air Staff in 2001. Since then he has been associated with many institutes for strategic studies and has widely participated in seminars in India and abroad. He has also written many articles and lectured to number of diverse audiences on National Security issues. He has been a member of the National Security Advisory Board (Dec2001 to Jan 2004) and also a member of the Task Force to study Global Security Dimensions(2006). Currently, he is the Executive Director of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute at Delhi.
